3 Tips to Help Kids Who Hate Washing Their Hair

Thanks JOHNSON’S® for partnering with me on this post. As always, all opinions are my own

Yup, if you are like me, you have googled this topic numerous times before. Do you dread washing your kids’ hair because they hate it so much? I am here to offer you solidarity support! We have been there and survived! Having a toddler whose hair texture and overall feelings about water are nothing like my own can be a challenge. Ever since she was a newborn baby, her hair has been tough to manage. You probably remember from seeing her birth announcement and recall her thick, sometimes wavy, sometimes curly mane. It stands straight up in some spots and tends to knot. As if her hair texture wasn’t enough of a challenge, she also hates the water. Now she is old enough to verbalize it--I knew it was not a passing phase.

Here are a few things that has helped us reduce the number of tantrums and tears shed when it comes to hair washing!

1.     Hair Products are Your Best Friends

Not all baby shampoos are created equal. I learned this the hard way. Since Kai’s hair type is so different than mine, thanks to her curly haired daddy, I had no idea how to manage the tangles during and after bath. Her mangled hair then would be so hard to brush out, causing many screaming tantrums right before bed.

JOHNSON’S No More Tangles Detangling Shampoo is our go-to for smoothing Kai’s locks. When I first saw the newly redesigned bottle, I was so impressed with JOHNSON’S for the ergonomic considerations. The bottle is teardrop shaped and easy to hold with one hand. They have also added 50%+ more pumps into their packaging to make it easy to handle a wiggle baby and get product out with one hand.

The JOHNSON’S No More Tangles Detangling Shampoo has a hypoallergenic formula, made to be gentle on baby’s sensitive scalp. The most important part I appreciate is the No More Tears formula. Even when I accidentally rinse the shampoo near her eyes, I don’t have to worry about it irritating her. The JOHNSON’S No More Tangles Detangling Shampoo is as gentle to the eyes as pure water.

Some things you’ll notice while using the JOHNSON’S No More Tangles Detangling Shampoo: it’s easy to lather, smells delightful, plus rinses clean and fast. All those qualities come in handy when you are trying to conquer hair washing as quickly as possible. The best part, it leaves her hair soft, smooth and tangle free.

As a part of JOHNSON’S dedication to Choose Gentle, all the ingredients to their products are listed transparently online. You will find the JOHNSON’S No More Tangles Detangling Shampoo is free of parabens, phthalates, sulfates and dyes.

2.     Talk about The Plan

I truly believe in empowering and involving children in the game plan. Laying out the steps helped Kai tremendously in understanding the process and the reason why we ask her to tilt her head. Use a bath toy or plastic bath animal to show your child what you are going to do. We let Kai pour the water over her favorite duck in the tub to demonstrate.

3.     Creative Ways to Look Up

Somethings that worked well for us are bubbles, mirrors, flashlight and laser pointers. Bubbles were the most effective and fun for Kai. Kevin would blow bubbles and I would ask Kai to look up and try to catch them. When all else fails, we stuck glow in the dark stars to the ceiling of the bathroom, over the tub so Kai can look up and count them.

I hope these tips help your child have an easier time with his or her hair saga. One last thing, when in doubt, turn on some music! I know it always helps brighten all our moods. Happy bath time!
