3 Ways to Create a Welcoming & Relaxing Atmosphere for Your Puppy on National Dog Day
Did you know National Dog Day is Sunday, August 26th? What better way to prepare for the festive holiday by treating your dog best friend to an updated sanctuary? After all, cats get a day every week (aka Caturday), why shouldn’t you spoil your dog on National Dog Day!
For those of you who don’t know Olie, our rescue pup well, he is just the kindest dog on the planet. We adopted him 3 years ago and he is the best big brother to Atlas, our munchkin cat and of course Kai our toddler who rules the house. Whenever brining a new family member home, we always made sure to give Olie special attention. He is protective and loves snuggle up with Kai so we thought this would be a great opportunity to revamp 2 corners of the house to make it super dog friendly.
Today, I am sharing 3 tips to create a welcoming, relaxing pet sanctuary for your dog (or when Atlas steals his space, we can call it a cat sanctuary too). Follow these easy steps to give your dog a sense of love and belonging.
Tip 1: Put the Dog Right Where the Action Is
It’s no secret dogs love to be with their owners. Olie followers Kai around like a hawk. Maybe it’s because she drops snacks like it’s going out of style. Maybe he just wants to be near the action. Either way, we decided to craft a little corner JUST for him, right where she hangs out in the play room. We added a dog teepee to match Kai’s play tent so they could be side by side. He loves having a space of his own where he gets to observe all the action. We made the space cozy with a new dog bed under his teepee. The Company Store is our go to for high quality pet needs. Their line of bed covers is one of the most extensive I have seen. The quality, just like everything else we’ve experienced from The Company Store, is durable and made with great materials.
We decided on the Solid Dog Bed – (Rectangular). You can get the insert with either PrimaLoft® Or Memory Foam. We chose PrimaLoft® Pet Bed Insert because Olie loves a fluffy pillow feel. The material of the dog bed cover is durable denim and quilted nylon. It also comes with a nifty handle on the side for easy transport.
I added a Lacrosse® Pet Sleeping Bag on top of the dog bed because it was just the cutest dog sleeping bag I have ever seen! Olie loves to dig. The Lacrosse® Pet Sleeping Bag is perfect for animals who love to burrow and burry themselves in blankets. Atlas, our cat may eventually claim this for himself. The faux Sherpa lining on the inside is so cozy and warm. It’s going to be a favorite spot for both our cat and dog
I couldn’t resist updating Kai’s playroom teepee with a few modern yet boho throws pillows from the Company Store as well. I fell in love with the rich textures and fringes of the throw pillows. I think the key to a thrown together eclectic look is varying the sizes and textures on the pillows.
Tip 2: Create a Defined Pet Space in Your Bedroom
I know there are varying schools of thoughts on this but Olie has slept in bed with us for the last 2 years. We actually have him crate trained while Kevin wasn’t working remote. Now, he basically snuggles at the food of the bed every night. Regardless where your dog snoozes, The Company has a great and stylish solution. From colorful, fluffy crate mats to bed protectors, we found a huge selection. We chose the PrimaLoft® Deluxe Dog Bed Protector for the foot of the bed to define Olie’s relaxing space. It’s amazing for keeping dirt, grass or pet hair from getting all over our sheets and comforter. He also loves to dig on our bed. This dog in bed protector is durable and beautiful. I seriously cannot imagine living without it. We topped it off with a custom monogramed dog pillow (LaCrosse® Down-Free™ Dog Bone Pillow With Cover). For only $24, I think this makes the BEST custom gift for a dog lover and their best doggie friend!
Tip 3: Upgrade the Style of Your Dog Bowls
This tip is more for us pet owners. Our dog food and water bowls are always out in the middle of the house. There is no reason why we can’t make it a beautiful accent versus an eye sore. I looked long and hard for the best durable wooden dog bowls and landed on the Anderson Dog Bowl made from environment-friendly acacia wood. I was really impressed with the heavy duty craftsmanship of these pet bowls. I love that they come in a variety of sizes too! The Dog Bone Feeding Mat in Natural Jute is neutral enough for any décor. It’s absorbed for the occasional spill but looks so stylish!!
In our hearts, it’s always National Dog Day. I think every dog deserves to feel comfortable and safe. I hope creating these relaxing spaces for Olie will help him continue to feel loved! Come tell me about your special doggie on my Instagram! I’d love to hear how you spoil them on National Dog Day!
